About London Tower Bridge

London Tower Bridge is one of the most famous towers in the world. Its construction took 8 years, 5 major contractors and the relentless labour of 432 construction workers. At the time the bridge was built, it was the largest and most sophisticated bascule bridge ever completed. To support the bridge, 2 massive piers were sunk into the river bed, and more than 11 000 tons of steel were used for the framework.

More than 50 designs were taken into consideration, some of which are displayed today at the Tower Bridge Exhibition, but, the design wasn't chosen until October 1884, when Horace Jones, the City Architect, in collaboration with John Wolfe Barry, offered the elected design for Tower Bridge as a solution. London Tower Bridge was officially opened on 30 June 1894, by The Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VII), and his wife, The Princess of Wales (Alexandra of Denmark).

Although, Tower Bridge is currently powered by oil and electricity, the original steam engines are still maintained by a dedicated team of technical officers and are positioned in their original location for all to see, in the area known as the Victorian Engine Rooms, the second section of Tower Bridge Exhibition.
